Rocky Mountain Tech Trifecta v3.0

The Rocky Mountain Tech Trifecta is an annual event held in Denver in late February or early March. The last couple of these have been amazing events, with great speakers like Beth Massi, Scott Hanselman, David Yack, Kathleen Dollard, Ben Hoelting, Paul Nielsen… need I go on? Registration is open at http://www.rmtechtrifecta.com. The speaker list hasn’t been finalized, but it’s sure to be another great event. Don’t miss it ...

New York City, Here I Come!!

I’m delighted to reveal that I’ve been accepted to speak at the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) IT Architecture Conference (ITARC) in New York City, September 22-24th. I’ll be speaking on effective architecture refactoring… or, in other words, telling people about the mistakes I made, in the hopes that they won’t have to repeat them. For those in NYC, this is well worth attending. The keynotes will be delivered by some people you may have heard of: John Zachman, Scott Ambler, ...

IASA ITARC – Denver May 6th

The Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is holding an IT Architect Regional Conference (ITARC) in Denver on May 6th. The speaker list for this conference is amazing. Paul Rayner, Dave McComb, Randy Kahle, Peter Provost, Randy Stafford, George Fairbanks – all great speakers, and from Colorado. Brandon Satrom (who also happens to be the president of the IASA Austin chapter) will also be speaking, as will some other heavy hitters (for example, Ted Farrell, Chief ...

Microsoft Events Come Back to Fort Collins

It’s been a while since Microsoft MSDN and TechNet events have been in Fort Collins. I’m very pleased to be able to pass on Microsoft’s announcement that on April 21st, these events will be held at the Drake Center as half-day events. A huge “thank you” to Erin Dolan, Joe Shirey and Daniel Egan for making this happen! Join us for an in-person event you won’t want to miss! No matter what your role, you’ll find an event series that fits what you do—and what the 2010 products from Microsoft have to ...

Upcoming Azure Talks

I'll be presenting on Azure here in Fort Collins tonight, and again in Boulder on March 24th. The talks will focus on providing an introduction to Azure, including working through some of the common pain points (such as debugging). I will, of course, be posting tips and tricks here as I get them in a coherent format

VS Live San Francisco

I've got the paperwork now, so I guess this is official. I submitted a talk on writing concurrent applications for VS Live in San Francisco in February. I'll be speaking on Thursday Feb 26th -- if you happen to be making the conference, look me up! I'm looking forward to this; there's lots of great content being presented, including a full day post-con on Azure ...

Steve Milroy rocks!

We had Steve Milroy (Microsoft RD and MVP) speak to the Northern Colorado .NET SIG last night. Steve gave a great presentation on Virtual Earth, including a great overview of the capabilities and features. There's some very cool, very powerful pieces to the VE API. Indeed, in many situations, I'd far prefer the VE API to some of the enterprise-level GIS APIs I've used in the past. For those interested in learning more about VE, Microsoft has one of the best API documentation/demo/tutorial sites I've ...

Front Range Code Camp Post Mortem

Well, the Front Range Code Camp was this past Saturday. I gave two talks -- threading and speech recognition. The threading talk (code samples and slide deck here) was pretty well attended -- about 12 people, which was a good third of the attendees. The strangest part was that there were only two people in the room that were .NET developers, and one of those was still using 1.1 so my BackgroundWorker examples weren't all that much use to him. The rest were Ruby and Java developers, plus a small cadre ...

Design Patterns

This month's Northern Colorado .NET Special Interest Group presentation was on Design Patterns. Ben Hoelting came up from Colorado Springs, and gave a great talk; slide deck and code samples will be posted on his blog. Ben will be giving a similar talk at the Denver VSUG in July. If you're at all responsible for design, especially design you get to do the maintenance on later, you'll want to be familiar with these patterns ...

System.Speech -- What is it?

I've been lurking on the fringes of speech recognition for quite some time. My first exposure required installation of a dedicated ISA sound card. Yes, it was that long ago. As you can imagine, that experience was somewhat less than exhilarating. My next go round was with Dragon in 1999 (I think they were owned by Corel at that point). Although the engine took a while to train, and didn't do very well on some of the words I tried to feed it ("Kosovo" comes to mind). However, once you corrected what ...

Front Range Code Camp

Next Saturday (May 19th) is the Front Range Code Camp in Denver. I'll be speaking on both the System.Speech namespace and threading in .NET
